Picture a forest underwater. Metal or rope structures in the shape of trees, each branch hung with small coral fragments suspended in the current. Fish drift through looking for shelter. The coral grows slowly, one centimeter per month in a good season. It looks fragile from the surface. Six meters down, it feels like hope.

A coral nursery is an underwater structure where coral fragments are attached and grown to sufficient size before being transplanted onto degraded reef areas. Nurseries provide stable, sheltered conditions with good water flow and light that allow fragments to grow faster than they would in the wild. Common nursery types include rope lines, metal trees, and frame structures made from rebar or PVC. Types of Coral Nursery Structures
Rope Line Nurseries
The simplest and least expensive nursery design uses ropes suspended horizontally between anchoring points on the seafloor. Coral fragments are attached at intervals along the rope using monofilament or cable ties. Rope nurseries are easy to scale up, can hold large numbers of fragments, and allow fragments to be easily accessed for maintenance. They work best in areas with stable currents that keep the ropes taut and prevent tangling.
Tree or Frame Nurseries
Tree-shaped nurseries, made from metal pipe or rebar, stand upright on the seafloor and hold fragments on their branches. Frame nurseries can be designed in many shapes, from flat tables to complex three-dimensional structures. These designs allow for higher fragment density and can accommodate different coral species with different growth habits. How a Coral Nursery Works Day to Day
A functioning coral nursery requires regular maintenance dives every two to four weeks. During each maintenance visit, divers check fragments for algae overgrowth and manually clean affected fragments. Algae is the most common cause of nursery failure because it overgrows and smothers coral fragments if left unchecked. Divers also monitor for predator damage from crown-of-thorns starfish and corallivorous snails, check structural integrity, and assess fragment growth.
Each fragment in a well-managed nursery is tagged and tracked. Growth measurements, health observations, and any mortality are recorded. This data helps nursery managers understand which species and which fragments are performing best under local conditions, which informs future collection and transplanting decisions.
From Nursery to Reef: The Transplanting Decision
Not every fragment that enters a nursery makes it to transplanting. Fragments that show signs of disease, slow growth, or chronic bleaching may be removed. The selection of fragments for transplanting is guided by both size and health. Larger fragments have a higher survival rate after transplanting because they can better compete with algae and withstand physical disturbance. Health assessment focuses on color, tissue integrity, and growth rate.
When fragments are selected for transplanting, they are removed from the nursery structure and transported to the target site in water-filled containers to minimize air exposure. At the target site, prepared substrate is cleared of algae and debris before fragments are attached. The goal is to give each transplant the best possible start.
Coral Nurseries in Cebu: What We Know
The Maribago Bay coral nursery project, in which our Director of Dive Operations Dindo Paquibot participated from 2019 to 2024, demonstrated that coral nurseries can be built and maintained in Cebu’s reef conditions with locally trained divers. The project operated through the COVID-19 pandemic years, a period when many conservation programs across Southeast Asia suspended operations. The fact that it continued, with local divers maintaining the nurseries through some of the most difficult years in recent history, is a testament to the commitment of the people involved.
A coral nursery is not just a tool. It is a statement about what the reef can become if people decide to invest in it.
How many corals can a single nursery hold?
Capacity varies by nursery type and size. A 10-meter rope line can hold 50 to 100 fragments. A tree nursery can hold 200 to 500 fragments depending on its design. Large nursery networks can hold thousands of fragments.
Do coral nurseries require constant attention?
Maintenance dives every two to four weeks are standard. Without regular maintenance, algae overgrowth can destroy a nursery within a few months.
Can nurseries be destroyed by typhoons?
Yes. Typhoons are a significant risk for coral nurseries in the Philippines. Robust nursery design, including structures that can be lowered or secured before a storm, and strategic placement in sheltered locations reduce but cannot eliminate this risk.
