Reef Without Borders

The reefs of the Philippines do not need observers. They need people willing to show up, get in the water, and do the work. If that is you, we want to hear from you.

Why Volunteer With Us

Your time goes directly into the reef.

Reef Without Borders is a lean, field-first organization. Every volunteer who joins us contributes directly to documented reef restoration work in Cebu, Philippines. We do not have busy work. We have real missions, real coral, and real results that we film, publish, and share with the world.

Whether you are a certified diver, a marine science student, a filmmaker, a communications professional, or someone who simply wants to give their skills to something that matters, there is a place for you in this work.

Ways to Volunteer

Find your role in the mission.

We welcome volunteers across a range of disciplines. You do not have to be a diver to make a difference. Here are the areas where we are actively looking for support.

🤿 Reef Restoration Diver

Join our Reef Rescue dive missions in Cebu, Philippines. Volunteer divers assist with coral nursery maintenance, fragment transplantation, and reef health monitoring under the supervision of our Director of Dive Operations. This is hands-on, underwater conservation work in one of the most biodiverse reef systems on the planet.

All dive missions are documented on camera and published publicly. Your work will be seen.

Required: PADI Advanced Open Water or equivalent. Minimum 30 logged dives.
🔬 Reef Health Monitor

Assist our science team with underwater reef surveys, photo transects, coral health assessments, and biodiversity data collection at our Cebu field sites. Reef monitors contribute directly to The Reef Archive, our living public database of reef health across every site we work.

Training is provided for all monitoring protocols. Prior experience with reef check methodologies is a plus but not required.

Required: Comfortable in open water. Science or marine biology background preferred.
🎥 Underwater Photographer and Filmmaker

Every Reef Without Borders mission is filmed underwater from entry to coral planting to exit. We welcome volunteer underwater photographers and videographers who can help document our restoration work for donors, grant applications, and public education.

Content produced on our missions is published on YouTube, Instagram, and in our donor reports. Your footage becomes part of the permanent Reef Archive record.

Required: Dive certified. Experience with underwater camera housing preferred.
📚 Marine Education Volunteer

Support our Coral and Kin ocean literacy program, which brings Philippine reef science to Filipino-American youth in Houston and to school communities in Cebu. Education volunteers help develop curriculum, facilitate workshops, and connect young people to the ocean their heritage comes from.

This role does not require dive certification and can be done remotely or in person in Houston or Cebu.

Required: Teaching, education, or marine science background preferred.
📣 Communications and Content Volunteer

Help us tell the story of the reefs. We welcome volunteers with skills in writing, social media, graphic design, video editing, and photography to support our content calendar, donor communications, and public education materials.

This role can be done entirely remotely from anywhere in the world. No dive certification required.

Remote friendly. Skills in writing, design, or social media welcome.
🤝 Community and Outreach Volunteer

Help us build relationships with the Filipino-American community in Houston and with coastal communities in Cebu. Community volunteers support our fundraising events, donor engagement, and grassroots outreach efforts that connect more people to the mission of protecting Philippine reefs.

Based in Houston or Cebu? This role is for you. Remote support is also welcome.

Houston TX or Cebu Philippines based preferred. Remote also welcome.

How volunteering with us works.

1 Send us an email. Write to info@reefwithoutborders.org and tell us who you are, what skills or experience you bring, and which volunteer role interests you. There is no formal application form — just a genuine conversation about how you can contribute.
2 We will respond within 5 business days. Every inquiry is read by a real person. We will follow up with questions, next steps, or information about upcoming missions and opportunities that fit your background.
3 Field volunteers plan their trip to Cebu. For dive and field-based roles, you arrange your own travel and accommodation in Cebu. We will connect you with our Director of Dive Operations on the ground and give you everything you need to prepare for your mission.
4 Remote volunteers get onboarded by email. For communications, content, education, and outreach roles, we work together remotely. We will brief you on current priorities, share brand assets and guidelines, and connect you with the right person on our team.
5 Your contribution is documented and credited. Field volunteers are named in every mission report, dive log, and published video they participate in. Remote volunteers are credited for the content they produce. We believe everyone who helps restore the reefs deserves to be recognized for it.
